Jaguar Sun Playlist

It seems lots of writers have playlists for their books these days. I think that’s probably what inspired me to create one. I can’t listen to music when I write. It’s too distracting. But, I love to create playlists to listen to around the house or in the car. It helps to keep me inspired.
I’ve listed the playlist for Jaguar Sun below. For some songs I’ve explained a little bit about why it made the list. I have fairly eclectic taste, so most of you will probably find at least one song you know or can relate to in some way.

  • Uprising — Muse (Muse is one of my all-time favorite bands. And Maya and the shifters are definitely leading an uprising to change the world!)
  • Everybody’s Changing — Keane (I love Keane. And it’s a great second song for the playlist, as Maya must be feeling that way at times.
  • Fall On Me — REM (This is actually my favorite REM song. But it also really fits the Mayan message about honoring nature.)
  • Clocks — Coldplay (The clock ticks for Maya the entire book as she races the Mayan calendar.)
  • Animal — Neon Trees (This is kind of an ode to the shifters in Jaguar Sun.)
  • Tu y Yo — Ricky Martin (The title translates to You and I. It’s Matt and Maya’s song. It’s fitting that it’s in Spanish. At the end there is a woman doing a very indigenous chant that suits Maya well.)
  • Walk On — U2 (I hear this as Maya walks to her unknown fate at Chichen Itza.)
  • Apocalypse Please — Muse (Also known as Emergency, this one is probably self-explanatory!)
  • Butterfly, Butterfly (acoustic version) — a-ha (Yep, they’re still around! This is Maya’s song and it suits her to a “T.” I’ve posted the lyrics for you below.)

Butterfly, Butterfly (a-ha)

Butterfly, butterfly
Flying into the wind
You can be sure of it
That’s no place to begin

Over thinking every little thing
Acknowledge the bell you can’t unring

Tomorrow, you don’t have to say what you’re thinking
You don’t have to mean what you say

Butterfly, butterfly
Flutter in to the skies
Butterfly, butterfly
Their molecular cries

Chrysalis dreams waiting on the fifth in-star
These stained glass wings could only take you so far
You don’t have to say that it matters
You don’t have to turn something in
Stay with it through thick and thin
Butterfly, begin

Butterfly, butterfly

Tomorrow, you don’t have to mean what you say
Left without a reason to stay
Comes the last hurrah
Here’s our last hurrah
